    Let me explain food storage and nutrient loss in produce. Man currently stabilizes food through one of several processes. There is the process of refrigeration. There is also the process of using chemical additives, there's canning, and there's drying of different goods. With each of these processes the goal is to minimize the deterioration of the nutrients. Each procedure has deficiencies that compensate the quality of the food eaten.

    Another criteria for highly nutritious produce are for it to have been vine-ripened. Vine-ripened plant material for example, has 2,000 times the nutritive value of the immature produce supplied at most supermarkets and is again many thousand times more nutritious than the current preservation procedures. However, when separating plant material from the roots there remains another immense problem. There is a 90% deterioration of some enzymes occurring within the first 10 - 15 minutes of actual harvesting of leaf or fruit plant material.

    Two areas are excluded from this phenomenon. These are root crops and seeds. Both are able to produce new vegetative growth under the appropriate conditions and therefore can be considered LIVE foods. The differences on the other hand, are the length of storage each can sustain. Under cool conditions root crops can maintain their potency for several months. The seed is designed for storage for many years.

    The mother plant, in the final stages of the development, will sacrifice itself to make sure that its reserves or offspring have high quantities of the different collodial minerals that are essential for all life. Depositions of these important nutrients are stored in the seed coat whereas proteins are stored as long chain carbohydrates or starches. In this form the nutrients can be stored and broken down at some future date to provide energy for the newly growing plants.

  3. What is the nutritional difference between seeds and plants?

    When comparing total seed nutrients to regular produce, an example I like to go through is that of using daily nutrient requirements, as outlined by Health Canada's nutritional guide of required elements. Let's look at the required amount of magnesium that would be necessary to ingest on a daily rate. Given a human digestibility rate of 5% the required amount of spinach, which is very high in magnesium, necessary to ingest would be approximately 200 pounds per day. That's an awful lot of spinach! In comparison with whole seed nutritional values of cereal grains, the equivalent would be approximately half a pound or a little over 220 grams of material. With root crops the differences are closer. However, a seed will still contain over 200 times the nutritional value.

    The minerals that are found in the seed are concentrated up to four hundred times that of other plant material. The calculated potential compared to regular store produce is 800,000 times more nutritious!!

    The problem is that seed composition is made up of long chain carbohydrates and starches with the nutritive value, which exceeds plant material many times. The key is to unlock this nutritious composition of seed in a sequential manner keeping it in a highly digestible form that is stabilized for an extended time.     Let me give you the background that proceeds the Barley Gold product and explain the "Nutrient Stabilization Process". Now, my business and research over the past 12 - 13 years has been with seed priming. Seed priming is a process whereby the initial germination of a dominant seed has been started then stopped. The live seed at this point has a memory. The metabolism has then been changed, so that when re-hydration of the seed occurs, under certain conditions, germination is almost immediate and a massive root system is established. Chemically, the growth regulator sequences differ from seeds that have not been primed. Primed seeds are sometimes called "drought hardened seeds" that produce "drought hardened plants".

    Probably about ten years ago now, I started to develop an idea on a unique way of releasing the high nutrient content of the seed and re-stabilize the nutrients with a natural procedure. The analysis and subsequent thinking was based on the following facts. It has been known literally for thousands of years that in order to release the nutritive value of the seed, germination muse be initiated so that the natural enzymes can initiate the breakdown of their complex storage structures.

    Now, over the last 80 years different scientists all over the world have been testing germinating seed and they have been looking at it as to the varying results with animal production. This assessment of bioassay basically looks at comparing the animal's different body weights, their health and assessing their byproduct production. So in other words, what are differences in the milk or egg production over time and what is the mortality rate of the young.

    In these different studies what has been seen very consistently is that approximately 50% of the time there had been excellent results with the germinated product. The other 50% of the time there were either negative results or results equal to the regular feed program. Overall, in the scientific community, the decision on whether or not germinated seed is in fact a product of higher nutritive value is really indecisive.

    Now, in doing work with individual seeds we first studied the different imbition cycles. This is the rate and amount of moisture a seed absorbs over time. One major objective was to provide uniform or synchronized germination. The second objective was to learn how to do large quantities of seeds and control the high of bacterial activity normally produced in soaking seeds. The third was a procedure, which does not utilize a chemical priming process. Current procedures use organic salts or quite often polyethylene glycol. What these materials do, is to cause or allow the moisture to be absorbed in a sequential form so as not to drown the seed. What we were able to develop is a process called the "GEM" process. "GEM" is an acronym for the Growth Enhancement Method. If allows us to overcome most of the previous obstacles with seed priming. Seeds are completely synchronized to germinate within minutes of each other. The treatment process is so quick that bacterial growth is impossible. The process is 100% mechanical eliminating the usage of chemicals. While doing this, I kept thinking back to the different animal tests. The results that were occurring did not make sense. The confusion of the results must have been first due to a misunderstanding of seed germination and secondly due to the handling procedures that were used prior to feeding.

    The facts still remained that the complex structures of the carbohydrate and starch molecules, in the seed lower the digestibility factor. Germinating the seed increases..........digestibility..........bottom........line.

    For example, cattle that have the most complex type of digestive system are only able to digest approximately 53% of material that has been rolled, crushed and has had digestive enzymes added. However, if germinated seedlings can be fed fresh, there is up to a 97% digestibility. Now, the human digestive system, on the other hand, is very inefficient and only digests 5 - 10% of the non-germinated material. Current processing procedures of food, especially with flour lower nutritional values further by removing the seed coat. The seed coat contains over 95% of the collodial minerals. We know that the addition of true whole seed flour to the human diet alone is incredible.
Animal scientists when conducting tests use whole seed. This is compared with the additions or subtractions of enzymes, minerals, vitamins and medication and correlations are thus developed. What I was looking at was not just adding the basic or the commonly known enzymes. But, rather, looking at the natural combinations of enzyme ratios of synchronized germinated seed in a new stabilized procedure. With whole foods such as a germinating seed, there are automatically different enzyme combinations at different times in the germinating process. The "GEM" process solved the previous problem of both synchronization and provided a natural priming procedure for a large component of seeds. So, by looking at seed and seed priming, what I was looking at trying to do was to take a food that was extremely high in nutrients, synchronize the enzymes, stabilize the enzymes and other nutrients and yet maintain a high digestibility of the ingested material. The stabilization of the nutrients within the seed was the next problem to be overcome.

This now, is where I have some exciting discoveries to share with you. I am going to give you some personal background as to how our research team came to discover how to preserve the seed's high nutrient values through synchronizing and stabilizing the enzymes and thus come up with a product which exceeds 90% digestibility!!!

The first benchmark for the stabilization that we were looking for was high levels of Super Oxide Dismutase over extended periods of time. Super Oxide Dismutase or SOD is an antioxidant produced by plants and animals and used as the first line of defense for the immune system of a plant. A plant utilizes the SOD when it has been injured. Sap-like material containing SOD is exuded, which oxidizes foreign organisms that are trying to infect the injured or weakened plants. Once exposed to the atmosphere, the SOD's deteriorates extremely quickly. Also, when separating plant material from the roots there is a 90% deterioration occurring within the first 10 - 15 minutes of actual separation. So, by exhibiting an extremely high level of SOD, I thought it would also reflect the stabilization of other nutrients in growing plants.

The third aspect of total digestibility of the barley was of equal concern. Again, as I had mentioned earlier with the cattle the digestibility factor is normally running around 53% with the non-processed material. With humans, the seed digestibility factor is probably running as low as 5%. So, any digestibility factor that was significantly higher would show we had synchronized the enzymatic production and maintained the natural nutrient composition while keeping it all in a highly digestible form.

Tests were started approximately 6 years ago comparing regular and "GEM" processed, stabilized barley with broiler chickens. We wanted to try to determine what differences would be on a duplicated statistically significant testing procedure. We entered into a private research agreement with Agriculture Canada, the National Research Counsel of Canada and the Alberta Research Counsel. We ended setting up two different tests whereby we could provide a product analysis and a complete bioassay. Differences occurring as far as any gains or losses or differences in the health of the animal were to be observed. There were basically two tests done.

The initial nutritional analyses were very exciting. The lab results showed our N.S.P. barley maintained a high digestibility with all animals but also showed an increase in total protein values by up to 50%!!

The first bioassay test was with feeding broiler chickens only barley. Both groups has sub groups that had product with and without enzyme additives. What was noted was that with our enhanced barley product there was an approximately 30% weight gain and it didn't make any difference whether enzymes were added or not. Birds also increased their daily intake by 25%. Now, this certainly caught the attention of the research team down at Agriculture Canada because they had always seen a positive weight gain correlation with the addition of enzymes and had not been able to increase daily rations while increasing overall animal health.

As a little bit of history, in the poultry feed production, over the last half century, scientists have worked very extensively in refining the nutritional formula. Growing conditions have been optimized. This includes playing different music to the animals, the dimming of lights, and monitoring the length and times of how and when the lights are running. Usually, one half of the one percent weight gain is quite extraordinary and certainly well worth putting on the market. Now, because our initial test was not on a complete chicken feed, but rather a barley comparison, the question, "How would the Nutrient Stabilized barley replacement in current feed react?" remained in everyone's mind. This of course led to a second test.

With the first test also, there was other observations with the birds that were fed the enhanced barley that should now be noted.
  1. First, all these birds were leaner but were heavier.
  2. Second, all the hearts were more developed and stronger hearts. As an aside, heart attacks is a serious problem in reducing in broiler production.
  3. Third, all of the enhanced barley fed birds had a heavier bone mass. Again, poor bone structure causes lameness and weak birds are pecked to death further lowering production.
  4. Fourth, there was a significant increase in red and white blood cells.
  5. Fifth and final point, which really had us scratching our heads, was that all the birds that ate the enhanced barley had a higher viscosity of fluids within the intestines. What this means is that because of the primitive digestive system of the birds, they normally have to have a very low viscosity so the fluid could pass through the digestive tract. The fluid in the birds with the enhanced barley was twenty times higher than the birds that were on the regular feed. Theoretically, all the enhanced barley birds should have been dead. This in turn questioned the enzyme additions on nutritional formulas, as we know it today.
Many discussions were held as to who these anomalies were occurring.

Regarding the other point that occurred firstly, that of the birds being leaner and heavier, simply put, there were complimentary effects with the other observations. First that of the higher red blood cells. This enabled the animals to get waste material out of their cells and nutrient into their bodies quicker. They would have been more active, building more muscle and burning more energy, hence, being leaner and heavier.

The heavier bone mass that was occurring in the animal influenced the heavier weight also. However, this point is influenced more by the intestinal health of the bird. Highly digestible amounts of K and Mg allowed for the biological transmutation of these elements into Ca. The higher bone density also acts as an oxygen sink because of the reversible transmutation Ca<- ->O2 + Mg. The higher nutritional intake would further affect the health of the heart as well as other organs. This was in the high red and white blood cell production.

It is very interesting that with our initial test that we chose barley. In doing subsequent research, what I had discovered was that barley is extremely high in glucosamine. Approximately 2% of barley will turn into the amino acid glucosamine. Certainly the laboratory results confirmed the process has high digestibility and the SOD levels had been stabilized. However, a lab digester only simulates what should happen in animals. If the digestive tract is not functioning how could these added nutrients being absorbed into the animal? In doing the laboratory digestibility tests on the enhanced barley it was noted that the digestibility factors were as high as 97%. Subsequent research revealed that the glucosamine in the enhanced barley is used to regenerate or maintain intestinal health allowing the nutrients to be absorbed at high rates. It is interesting to note that 90% of all human problems are related to intestinal health. The glucosamine level with our product is keeping the intestinal regeneration extremely high, as exhibited by the nutrient absorption by the chickens. The more highly digestible nutrients during the growing period, being transmitted into an oxygen sink. Nutritional intake also affected the superior health of the heart and other organ health as exhibited in the higher red and white blood cells production.

From the first animal tests there were questions regarding the nutritional formula. The higher fluid viscosity in the intestine and the combinations of the enzymes in the N.S.P. barley were not clearly understood. Could other benchmarks be noted and in doing a chemical assessment of the material? Could we look at pinpointing other benchmarks?

The second test was divided into two areas. The first area we looked at was in the substitution of the untreated barley component, with the enhanced barley into the nutritional based feed rationing the birds were being fed. A comparison, both with and without enzymes, was to be examined. The second part of the test was to assess the Nutrient Stabilization effect of a total of nine different grains. The grains to be observed were regular hulled, hull less and malt barley, three different types of wheat corn, oats and rye. With the "GEM" process and the "Nutrient Stabilization Process" there are criteria that have to be followed. Each seed variety and plant type has its own unique formulation. Because I had been concentrating on barley, the decision was made that the nine grains would be treated exactly the same as barley. The bioassay results of the second test came back and showed that there were again increases in body weight and intake. The increases were lower and were running approximately 14% higher, compared to the 30% differences previously observed. Processing was changed to determine optimal timing. The bioassay determined that enzyme addition increased production. This was opposite from the first test. Thereby confirming the previous conclusions that the process is very precise. However, other benchmarks other than SOD levels were established enabling a more complete testing procedure for the "Nutrient Stabilization Process" or "NSP". the results of the second part of test two the bioassay of all nine individual grains also showed significant benefits with wheat and corn. Only oats and rye were negative. Now as I had mentioned before, all seed was treated as if it was barley. I do know that there are differences between the different seeds and plants and the other formulas need to be determined. Overall, I felt the testing was successful and has brought forth their questions that need to be answered.

It's interesting to note that discussion arose of other possibilities that the processed barley may have with other animals especially with humans. Thus the birth of Barley Gold.

In working back the nutritional requirements and the current digestibility factors, it was postulated that the equivalent of two heaping tablespoons would be sufficient for the average healthy adult human below the age of 25. This was based on the chemical analysis of a forty seven pound bushel weight of barley. General tests were started and results were extraordinary. Currently, we have not seen any detrimental affects other than the initiation of a healing crisis with older individuals or people with chronic conditions. Therefore, caution must be given when initiating a program with such a high nutritional value and must be increased gradually to an individual's diet. During the first thirty days, it is the goal that only very minor discomforts are felt while the body is initiating the healing process. The time interval, between the 45 - 90 day mark, is usually where the healing is likely to take place. If discomfort is to extreme, it is recommended that the individual terminate usage for a period of three days to a week to allow the body to regain a non-painful equilibrium. The process should be reinitiated once discomfort has subsided at a lower level and increased incrementally up to the two heaping tablespoons. Previous injuries or health problems may worsen but will disappear in the opposite order they occurred. This is called Herring's Law where the regression of disease occurs from the most recent symptom to the oldest or first symptoms that are the last to leave. Certainly continued use will maintain the healing process. After two months at two heaping tablespoons it is suggested that mega dosing occur. This is when eight to ten tablespoons of barley are taken throughout the day to help the body maintain the high rate of healing. After thirty days at this dosage the heavier, sixty-three bushel weight of barley can be started. We have found that two level tablespoons is equivalent to ten tablespoons of the regular barley. This heavier material is even more nutritious thus allowing greater nutrient absorption.

It must be understood that the Barley Gold product for humans is organically frown and organically processed. This is highly nutritious food and if the body is stopped being fed properly the old symptoms could easily return. This is part of the body's ecosonoid metabolic communication system. The cells of the body relay chemical messages to the intestine, which in turn communicate the needed building blocks that are required to maintain the highest efficiency and health.
